Rehabilitation Treatments

Extracorpeal Shockwave therapy or ESWT is a non-invasive treatment that can speed the healing of many types of orthopaedic and soft tissue injuries and conditions and has been used in human rehabilitation for a number of years and more recently in equine medicine.

Shockwave therapy is delivered via a probe and is a low energy wave directed through the skin to the target areas and is used for the treatment of musculoskeletal soft tissue disorders in horses. Such uses could include, back and pelvic pain or disease such as kissing spine of sacroiliac, ligament injuries and sprains and strains.

The Therapy is none invasive and is usually well tolerated, requiring little or no sedation and provides relief of acute and chronic pain. Shockwave therapy can help to restore mobility and promotes faster healing by stimulating the horses natural healing process by increasing blood flow, stimulating bone growth, tissue regeneration and the release of endorphins.

Shockwave treatment is generally delivered over three or four occasions. Our vets can bring the machine to your premises (as long as you have mains power) you or it can be done at the hospital.

Ask our vets if shockwave therapy might be useful for the care and rehabilitation of your horse, pony or donkey.
